A few hours is a legitimate ask
Respite visits can be arranged according to the client's needs, the three-hour minimum and caregiver availability. Families may use respite occasionally or as part of a regular schedule. The most common pattern we see is one predictable block each week — long enough to get to an appointment, do a proper grocery run, or simply sleep.
What the caregiver does while you are out
- Companionship — conversation, cards, reading, a walk, a familiar routine kept intact.
- Personal care as set out in the care plan: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting support.
- Meal preparation following documented preferences and instructions.
- Light homemaking such as laundry, dishes, tidying and bed linens.
- Medication reminders where the care plan includes them.
- General non-clinical safety awareness while the person goes about the day.
What respite is not
Respite is not nursing care, medical monitoring or emergency supervision. Z Home Care does not provide injections, wound care, catheter care, IV care, medical treatment or medication administration. If a client's needs become medical or unsafe, we explain that the request falls outside our non-clinical scope; in an emergency the appropriate response may include calling 911.
Cost and scheduling
The standard rate is $32 per hour with a three-hour standard minimum, so a respite block is $96 before any applicable tax. Regular evening and weekend visits are charged at the same published standard rate, subject to availability. Overnight or extended support may be available depending on assessed needs, service scope and caregiver capacity — discuss the hours and responsibilities before making firm plans.
Making it work in practice
Two things make respite genuinely restful. The first is caregiver continuity: we aim to send the same person as consistently as scheduling allows, so your parent is not re-introduced to a stranger every week. The second is a care plan detailed enough that you do not spend the first twenty minutes explaining the routine — which is exactly what the free in-home assessment produces.
