One-Time Companionship in St. John's: When You Only Need One Visit

A caregiver sitting and talking with an older woman in a bright St. John's living room during a single afternoon visit.

Most home-care conversations assume the same thing: that you are setting up a weekly schedule that will run for months. Plenty of families do not need that. They need one person, on one day, for one situation — and then life goes back to normal.

Z Home Care can arrange private one-time companionship and accompaniment for seniors and adults in St. John's and nearby Northeast Avalon communities. It is a private-pay, non-clinical service, arranged and paid for directly by the client or family.

When one visit is enough

  • A spouse who normally provides all the support has an appointment of their own.
  • An adult child who usually drives in from out of town cannot make it that week.
  • There is a specific event — a wedding, a christening, a funeral, a family dinner — and someone needs a steady arm.
  • A person is newly home after a procedure and the family wants company for one long afternoon.
  • Someone living alone is having a hard day and should not spend it by themselves.

What a one-time visit includes

Conversation and company, a shared meal or a cup of tea, a short walk, help with a task around the house, encouragement with a routine, or simply a dependable person in the room. Outside the home, it can mean accompaniment to an appointment, a community activity, a religious service or a family occasion.

It does not include medical treatment, nursing procedures, medication administration or emergency medical supervision. Z Home Care is a non-clinical provider, and we are direct about that boundary before anything is booked.

How booking works

Call 709-800-7385 or send an inquiry describing the date, the hours and what kind of support is needed. We complete a short intake review to confirm the request falls within our service scope, then confirm whether a suitable caregiver is available for that date and time. A three-hour minimum booking applies. The standard rate is $32 per hour plus applicable tax, and the public-holiday rate is $54 per hour plus applicable tax.

Nothing is confirmed until we say it is confirmed. We would rather tell you honestly that we cannot cover a date than leave a family waiting for a caregiver who is not coming.

One visit can become more — or not

Some families book once and never call again. Others discover that a few hours of relief each week changes the whole month, and move to a regular schedule. There is no contract pushing you in either direction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really book just one visit?

Yes. One-time private companionship and accompaniment may be arranged for a single occasion, subject to intake review, service scope and caregiver availability.

What is the minimum booking for a one-time visit?

Three hours. The standard rate is $32 per hour plus applicable tax; the public-holiday rate is $54 per hour plus applicable tax.

Is one-time companionship covered by a government program?

No. Z Home Care is a private-pay provider and is not currently an approved agency under the NL Health Services Home Support Program. Services are arranged and paid for directly.

How much notice do you need?

As much as you can give. Short-notice requests are reviewed promptly, but a date, time or specific caregiver cannot be guaranteed until arrangements are confirmed.
