On the day, that typically looks like arriving at the home in good time, helping the person get ready without pressure, getting to the clinic and finding the right department, managing the waiting room, being a calm presence in the room if the client wants that, and taking the person home afterwards — often with a stop at the pharmacy.
The quiet value: someone remembers
Older adults frequently leave appointments unable to recall what was said. A companion is not a medical interpreter and does not give clinical advice, but a familiar person present in the room means the family is less likely to be left guessing. What the caregiver can share, and with whom, is confirmed in advance with the client or authorized family representative and must respect privacy and consent requirements.
What a companion cannot do
Caregivers do not provide clinical services. They do not administer medication as a nursing procedure, make clinical decisions, change dosages, or perform any nursing task. They also do not make decisions on the client's behalf. Their role is presence, practical help and safety awareness.
Transportation
